How do you actually use live sonar?
Quick answer
Live sonar shows fish and your lure moving in real time, but it is a genuinely different skill from reading a scrolling trace and it takes a season to learn. The first thing to learn is identifying your own lure on the screen, because until you can do that reliably, nothing else on the display is interpretable.
Live sonar shows the water in real time rather than scrolling a history of what already passed under the boat. Fish move on screen, structure holds still, and your own lure falls, swims or sits exactly where you put it, all while you watch it happen instead of reading it after the fact.
That immediacy is also what makes it hard. Reading a traditional scrolling trace is a skill built over years on the water, and live sonar is a genuinely different one that does not transfer directly from it. Most people who buy a live sonar system spend their first season doing one thing: finding their own lure on the screen. Until that becomes automatic, nothing else the unit shows is interpretable, because you cannot tell a fish reacting to your bait from a fish that was already there.

What is live sonar and how is it different from side imaging?
Side imaging and traditional sonar both show a history: the boat passes over a spot and the screen fills in what the beam already saw. Live sonar instead shows what the beam is seeing right now, updated continuously, which is why it can show a fish swimming toward a bait rather than only a mark left behind where a fish used to be.
The tradeoff is coverage. A live sonar beam looks in one direction, forward, down or around depending on the mode, rather than mapping a wide strip of bottom the way side imaging does. It is a different tool solving a different problem: side imaging finds where structure and fish are in general, live sonar shows what a specific fish or a specific piece of structure is doing right now.
How do you learn to find your own lure on live sonar?
- Drop the lure straight down first. Before casting anything, lower the lure straight down next to the boat within the live sonar beam and watch the screen. A vertical drop next to the transducer is the easiest possible target to identify, because you know exactly where it has to be.
- Tap the line to confirm the mark. With the lure visible, twitch the rod tip or tap the line. The mark that moves in response is the lure. This single confirmation step is what most anglers skip, and it is the fastest way to stop guessing.
- Cast short before casting far. Make short casts inside the beam before working farther out, so the lure stays visible through the whole retrieve while you build the habit of tracking it.
- Watch how a fish reacts, not just where it is. Once the lure is reliably identifiable, watch what a nearby fish does as the lure approaches. Reaction, whether it turns toward the bait or ignores it, is the information live sonar adds that a scrolling trace never could.
- Expect a season, not a weekend. Treat the first weeks as training rather than fishing. Anglers who already read live sonar well typically describe a full season before it stopped feeling like translating a foreign screen in real time.
Where does live sonar mount, and why?
Live sonar transducers mount on the trolling motor shaft, not the transom and not the outboard. The reason is simple: the beam points wherever the transducer is aimed, and the trolling motor is the one part of the boat an angler is already actively steering toward the target. Aim the motor at the brush pile and the beam looks at the brush pile.
That also means live sonar does nothing useful while running on the outboard. There is no equivalent mount on the back of the boat that makes sense for the same reason a car headlight does not work pointed at the trunk: the beam has to be aimed at what you actually want to see, and only the trolling motor gets aimed that precisely, that often, by the person fishing.
Which display does each live sonar system need?
Garmin LiveScope and Humminbird MEGA Live are not interchangeable and neither is a universal accessory. Each is built to a specific maker's own display lineup, published in that maker's own compatibility list rather than assumed here.
Garmin LiveScope needs a compatible Garmin ECHOMAP or GPSMAP display, and Humminbird MEGA Live needs an XPLORE, APEX or SOLIX G3 head: neither system runs on the other maker's screen.

Losing track of the lure is the most common one, and it compounds: once you cannot find your own bait on the screen, every other mark becomes a guess rather than information. Aiming the trolling motor away from the target while trying to also fish is the second, because the beam only shows what the motor is pointed at.
The third is expecting Forward mode to replace side imaging rather than complement it. Forward mode shows a narrow slice of water ahead of the boat in detail. It will not tell you where the next brush pile is a hundred feet away the way a side imaging pass would, and treating it as a replacement rather than a different tool is the fastest way to be disappointed with an expensive purchase.

Why does live sonar mount on the trolling motor instead of the transom?
The beam points wherever the transducer is physically aimed, and the trolling motor is the part of the boat you are already steering directly at whatever you want to look at. A transom mount would only ever show whatever happens to be behind the boat, which is rarely the target you are trying to fish.
Does live sonar work with the outboard running?
Not usefully. The transducer mounts on the trolling motor shaft, and it has nothing steady to look at once the boat is running on the outboard rather than idling on the electric motor. Live sonar is a slow approach tool, used while easing up on a target with the trolling motor doing the aiming.
Do I need a separate battery for live sonar?
In practice, yes. Live sonar draws power continuously whenever the screen is on, on top of whatever the trolling motor itself pulls from the same bank. Most installations run it from its own dedicated battery so a long session of live sonar does not eat into the amp hours the motor needs to get back to the ramp.
What is the difference between live sonar and MEGA 360?
Live sonar, whether LiveScope or MEGA Live, looks in one direction at a time: forward, down or at an angle. MEGA 360 instead sweeps a full circle around the boat continuously, answering what is around the boat rather than showing a live view of a specific target the way forward facing modes do.
